Opening night of the 2006 racing season at Wilmot Speedway found the IRA Sprint Cars, Street Stocks and Trucks putting on a great show in front of a nice crowd.
In the headline event, the Wayne Daun Memorial IRA Feature, Bill Warren outlasted the rest of the field along with Mother Nature and picked up the win. Warren started from the outside of row number one alongside pole sitter KJ Skelton. Skelton held the top spot until Warren powered past him on lap 14. Skelton began to fade a bit and Donny Goeden worked past him for second on lap 15. Goeden had the front end break on lap 19 ending his night.
When Rick Kelsey came to a halt in turn four on lap 23, the rains came and the event was called with seven laps remaining. Mike Reinke finished second with Skelton holding off Todd Hepfner for third.
In the Street Stock division, Bruce Laubinger looked to defend his 2005 Championship. He started the feature where he left off – at the front and held it for the first three laps until Marty Abshire took over. The two drivers swapped the lead several times over the next several laps in some exciting racing. Unfortunately for both, they got together a bit too hard coming out of turn four on lap eight causing Laubinger to lose his left rear tire and ending his night. Abshire was put to the rear on the ensuing restart. 2004 track champion Todd Hensley inherited the lead and cruised to the win.
Opening night was also the first night of truck racing at the Wilmot Speedway. Vincent Merry became the first driver to win a truck race when he won the heat. Unfortunately, due to the rain, the truck feature was cancelled. The trucks will run two features on June 3, 2006.

A beautifully prepared track made for some exciting racing Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway as the Wilmot Outlaw Sprints, Modifieds, Sportsmen and Mini-Sprint divisions made their first visit to the track in 2006.
The Outlaw Sprint feature began with a flip by Frank Moser going into turn one just after completing lap one. Scott Lenz got by polesitter Kevin Hinich on lap two to take the top spot where he would be for most of the race. Brian Kristan looked like he might be the one to beat as he worked his way up from row five to the second position on lap three. A flip by Dave Maynard after making contact with Kirk Fehrman on lap four helped Kristan move right up behind the leader Lenz. After the restart, the two leaders caught up to lapped traffic on lap nine and when Lenz had to slow for the lapped car, Kristan was able to get by to take the lead. The yellow came out again as Fehrman couldn’t quite make it back to the pits. On the ensuing restart, the engine cover on Kristan’s number 5 came loose and made it difficult for him to see. That was all Lenz needed to get by and regain the lead on lap12. Tommy Sexton seemed to come from nowhere the last five laps and was able to get by Lenz coming out of turn four on the final lap to get the win. After the race, Sexton said the track was the best he had seen in years.
The Modified feature took a bit to get going as the yellow came out on lap 1 for the Mike Simons’ machine along with Larry Marshall exiting the speedway. Jeff Bodendorfer had to leave the speedway as the cars were getting relined up due to a flat right rear tire all but ending his hopes for a night one feature win. Lee Tibbetts, starting outside of row five took over the second position on lap three as several cars were battling for the top six spots. Mike Sullivan took over as the leader on lap five but gave it back to Mike Bodendorfer, the defending champion on lap seven. Sullivan would battle back and take the lead again a few laps later. Tibbetts night ended on lap eleven apparently due to some mechanical problem. Mike Conn, sporting a new paint job and number this year, joined the battle at the front and moved into the third position on lap 15. Jimmy Morrison dropped Conn and Bodendorfer back as he took over second on lap 15. However, that was as far as he was able to move up as Sullivan was able to hold off his late charge and pick up the first feature win of the season. Sullivan dedicated the win to his stepson whose birthday is in a few days.
Sixty-six year old John “Cudaman” Poehler showed the youngsters the quick way around the speedway in the Sportsman division. Poehler held off the hard-charging Bobby “The Colonel” Parker to pick up the win.
Ron Brannum didn’t waste any time showing everyone he is the one to beat in the Mini-Sprints. Starting outside row three, Brannum needed just five laps to overtake the leader. Once in front, he was never challenged and cruised to an easy win.
Next week, the Outlaw Sprints, Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stock and Trucks take to the 1/3 mile oval. Hot laps start about 6:30 and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

This week it wasn’t Mother Nature that forced the postponement of feature events Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. An electrical malfunction during intermission forced the cancellation of the rest of the program.
The truck division started the program off with their rescheduled feature from two weeks ago with Dale Gustum picking up the first truck feature win.
All the heat races were run prior to intermission when the electrical failure happened.

By Jay Ohman Wilmot, WI -
The hot action on the track made up for the cool conditions as the large crowd took in the six classes of action at Wilmot Speedway. Highlighting the evening was the Dean Sadowski Modified Memorial Feature with $1,700 slated for the winner.
First out for the features was the Mini-Sprints. Bob Reichert took off from the front row with John Draper in tow, Reichert seemed to be in control. With four laps in the books, Reichert was forced to pull his ailing car into the infield giving Draper the lead. Kurt Boers and Ron Brannum gave chase but were not able to catch Draper.
In victory lane, an elated Draper declared "this is my first Feature win in the Mini's, I am so happy it came at Wilmot Speedway". Brannum was able to slip past Boers coming for the checkers to take the runner-up spot.
The Wilmot Outlaw Sprints took the green with front row drivers Craig Lager and Chris Spitz taking off from the field and dueling for the lead for several laps. Darrell Dodd was on a mission from his third row starting spot, and with three laps in the books had reeled in the leaders and blasted past Lager for the lead. Dodd's considerable lead was erased as the only yellow of the race waved on lap eleven for Tommy Sexton parked sideways in turn four.
Dave Moulis and Tim Vandervere took advantage of the restart gunning up to the second and third spots. Moulis gave chase to Dodd and with the white flag waving had caught the rear bumper of Dodd. But lapped traffic would play a factor as the veteran Dodd was able to masterfully pick through the slower cars to pick up his first feature win of the season. Moulis followed three car lengths behind and Vandervere took third.
In the Sportsmen division, 'The Colonel' Bobby Parker was green to checker the leader, holding of the charge of John Poehler. Jim Fisher finished a distant third.
Next up was the Dean Sadowski Modified Memorial Feature. Long time and well respected modified driver Sadowski lost his battle to cancer last year, so several of his sponsors put up the extra purse money in Dean's memory. With the drop of the green, Lee Tibbitts bolted from the second row to take the early lead. Lap one and lap three cautions erased his lead, allowing Jimmy Muth Jr., Mike Sullivan and Nick Simons to quickly pick up spots on the restarts. With six of the thirty laps complete, Muth battled past Tibbitts to take the lead. A lap thirteen yellow bunched up the field again, on the restart Jeff Bodendorfer and Sullivan sliced past Tibbitts to give chase to Muth. An exciting three car battle ensued with Sullivan slipping past Muth for the lead.
The action heated up as Bodendorfer, Simons, Tibbitts and Muth all battled for the second spot, in the mean time letting Sullivan slip away to pick up his second Feature checkers of the season. Muth held on to the second spot and Simons made a final turn pass to take third. In victory lane, Sullivan announced "I dedicate my win to the memory of Dean Sadowski, and will donate half my payout to a cancer research charity of Eric Ade's choice".
In the Truck division, it was green to checker Dale Gustum picking up his second Feature win of the season. Chad Ross followed in second and Vincent Merry held on to third.
Closing out the evening was the Street Stock feature. After winning his heat race, Steve Kennedy picked his way forward from the fourth row to take the lead at the mid point of the race. Kennedy gracefully dodged lapped traffic to earn his first Feature win of the season with a straight-away lead over Bruce Laubinger, Steve Podratz followed in third.
Next week, the Badger Midgets will headline the show, with a special Trailer race adding to the entertainment. Also appearing will be the Sportsman, Street Stocks, and Trucks on the 1/3 mile oval. Hot laps start about 6:30 and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm. Visit the Wilmot Speedway website for more information or call the track office at 262-279-3892.

The Badger Midgets joined the Mini-Sprints, Trucks, Sportsman and Street Stock divisions at the Wilmot Speedway Saturday night.
In the Midget feature, Brad Kuhn took advantage of a late race restart to win the 30-lap event. Doug Schenck jumped into the lead at the start of the feature followed by Ric Forbes. Kuhn who earlier in the night set a new track record in qualifying passed five cars in the first five laps moving into the top five. Schenck and Forbes waged a torrid battle for the lead on the multi-groove track. Forbes pulled even at the line with Schenck on the tenth lap and took the lead exiting turn two.
Forbes stretched his lead over Schenck and Kuhn, before he began lapping the tail of the field at the midway point. With ten laps remaining Forbes held a near three second advantage, with Kuhn finally securing the second position from Schenck on the 22nd lap after the pair battled the previous ten laps. One lap later Kenny Adams made contact with another car on the backstretch causing him to flip out of the track, landing in the pit area. Adams escaped injury. On the lap 23 restart Kuhn quickly moved in behind Forbes with the pair running wheel to wheel for the lead over the next two circuits. Kuhn moved under Forbes entering turn three to take the event lead on the 26th lap. Once in front Kuhn went unchallenged for the final three laps finishing 1.29 seconds ahead of the tightly bunched field led by Scott Hatton, Forbes, Schenck and Davey Ray.
Bob Reichert outlasted the rest of the Mini-Sprint drivers in the A-Main and picked up his first Wilmot feature win. Reichert took the lead on lap from pole-sitter Jessica Brannum on lap one and kept her in his rear view mirror the entire race. Brannum held off several drivers enroute to a second place finish. Positions third on back would change between Randy Reed, Tom Brown and Ron Brannum with Reed finishing third and Brown fourth. Ron Brannum developed a mechanical problem on lap 13 and was unable to complete the event settling for an 11th place finish.
Brad Norgard scored his second feature victory in a row in his 04 numbered Street Stock. He wasted no time getting to the front from his outside second row starting position as he was the first to the line on lap one. Norgard would lead all 15 laps as the rest of the competitors could not work their way past him. Bruce Laubinger, the 2005 Street Stock Champion, mounted the most serious challenge but when he bobbled coming out of turn four on lap 13, all hope he had for the win was lost. The bobble did however, give Steve Kennedy the break he needed as Kennedy moved past Laubinger and held on to finish second. Ray Underwood made the most progress during the event as he moved all the way up from 12th to finish in the fourth position.
In the Sportsman division, John Poehler became the first repeat feature winner of 2006 as the 66-year old driver showed the youngsters how to get it done. Poehler and Bobby Parker were able to get past Jason Gaudynski, Jim Fisher and Jeff Graf all in the first 2 laps and finished 1-2. Graf ran a clean race to finish third holding off the 2005 Champion Ryan Stalter who was making his first appearance in 2006.
Dale Gustum continued his domination of the Truck division as he made it 3 for 3 in 2006. The otherwise uneventful race was marred by a violent flip by Jennifer Durham coming out of turn four on lap number one. Durham, the pole sitter, got sideways in front of the field and was hit broadside by Vincent Merry. Durham flipped towards the wall and hit it hard before coming back down on all four tires. Fortunately, Durham was able to walk away from the incident mainly shaken.
Katarina Hertz of McHenry, IL was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night. The action continues next Saturday night as the Wilmot Outlaw Sprints and Modified come back to join the Street Stocks, Mini-Sprints and Trucks. Hot laps start about 6:30pm and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Mike Simons picked up his first ever Modified feature win Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. The Modified drivers came out a bit rusty after having the last several weeks off. Simons, starting on the outside of the front row, grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and was leading BG Woods and Kris Techert when the yellow came out for the first time on lap five. By lap seven, Simons brother Nick had worked his way past Techert and was running third and starting to put pressure on Woods. Lap seven had Mike Conn making his way into the top five – moving up four spots from his starting position. Woods and Nick Simons got together coming out of turn two on lap eight but the car of Josh Heinze had already brought out the yellow allowing Woods and Nick Simons to get their spots back. Nick was able to get past Woods on lap 12 but Woods continued to battle. Mike Sullivan, winner of the previous two features developed a mechanical problem on lap 14 ending his quest to make it three for three. Woods was able to use lap traffic to get past Mike Simons on lap 16, but Simons took back the top spot one lap later. He held on for the win with Woods finishing second and Nick Simons finishing third. Jimmy Muth, with a late race pass over Conn came home fourth and Conn fifth.
The 410 Outlaw Sprint division found their third different winner in three feature events. Brian Kristan, just like Mike Simons, started on the outside of row one and jumped right out to the lead followed by Dave Moulis, Darrell Dodd and Kevin Hinich. Tommy Sexton seemed to be the fastest car on the track and worked his way up to the third spot on lap five when the yellow came out for the 4k of Chris Spitz. Unfortunately for Dodd, while Sexton was on his climb, the two cars made contact coming out of turn two with Dodd getting the brunt of the damage. Dodd was able to limp to the pits but his night was over. Tim Vandervere and Don Durham were able to make their way past Sexton on the restart with Kristan starting to pull away. Apparently, the damage to Sexton’s contact with Dodd was worse than originally thought and he came to a halt in turn three on lap eight. The final 12 laps would be run under green with Kristan holding off Vandervere and Moulis.
Brad Norgard began the Street Stock feature trying to make it three for three in 2006 but Tim Vandervere and Ryan Marshall had other plans. Vandervere and Marshall were running one-two by lap five and put on a great show with the more experienced Vandervere holding off the 14-yr old Marshall to pick up the win. Ed Duvall, driving for Bruce Laubinger who was home with he and his wife’s new baby, finished a very respectable third with Todd Hensley fourth.
Tom Benedetti led all eight laps of the truck feature to spoil Dale Gustum’s bid for his third feature win. Billy Combs finished second and Sarah Lyon third. The Mini-Sprints got their first repeat winner of 2006 as Ron Brannum made it to the checkered flag first. Brannum, starting fourth in the field, had to work his way past previous feature winners Bob Reichert and John Draper but was up to the task and took over the top spot on lap seven. Brannum never looked back and cruised to his second win of the season. Draper finished as the first runner-up and Reichert third. Kirt Bores and Kevin Hinich rounded out the top five.
Katarina Hertz of McHenry, IL was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night.
The action continues next Saturday night as the Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini-Sprints and Trucks take to the 1/3 mile oval. Also scheduled are the ever popular Modified “Powder Puff” race and a bike giveaway by Antioch Cyclery.
Hot laps start about 6:30pm and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm. Visit the Wilmot Speedway website for more information or call the track office at 262-279-3892.

by Bill Mews Wilmot, WI – Mike Sullivan and John Poehler both became three time feature winners in 2006 Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. Sullivan won a shortened Modified feature event marred by numerous cautions and Poehler was never really challenged as he picked up the Sportsman checker. The Modified feature started with Jim Zdroik and Mike Sullivan starting 7th and 8th respectively. The yellow came out for the first time after lap 1 and was a sign of things to come. Zdroik and Sullivan quickly worked their way up and got some help from Mike Bodendorfer and Jim Morrison who both spun while running 2nd and 3rd. With 3 laps in the record books, the field tried several times to get restarted with the yellow coming out for various drivers before they could even complete 1 lap. Once the field got under way, Zdroik took over the top spot on lap 5 followed by Tibbitts. Unfortunately for Tibbitts, he developed a mechanical problem and headed to the pits. The field was able to get in just three more laps before track officials called the race due to the multiple yellows giving the win to Sullivan who was leading at the time. Nick Simons finished second and Scott Shultis third.
John Poehler needed just 4 laps to move from his row 5 inside starting position to the top spot in the Sportsman feature. Once Poehler got past the 21s of John Sidesky on lap 4 he never looked back and won easily picking up his 3rd feature win of the year in front of Shane Heaney and Bobby Parker.
The Street Stock feature had a little bit of everything. On lap 5, Don Wienke lost a tire going into turn 1 which ended up back by the pits. The leader on lap 6, Brad Norgard, stalled his car in turn 3 bringing out the yellow and ending his hopes of a win. Jim Vandervere took the lead on lap 8 over Marty Abshire and Steve Kennedy. Vandervere and Abshire battled for the final 4 laps with Abshire picking up his first feature win of 2006. Vandervere finished 2nd and Kennedy 3rd.
In the Truck division, just 4 trucks were able to complete the entire feature event with Vincent Merry crossing the finish line first followed by Billy Combs, Sarah Lyon and Jennifer Durham. Merry became the 3rd different driver in 4 events to win.
The Mini-Sprint feature saw John Draper pick up his 2nd feature win of the season. Draper, starting from the pole, held the top spot over Randy Reed and Tom Brown going into lap 9 when Cody Ashwood spun his car bringing out the first yellow. The race would go nonstop from that point with Brown moving up to battle Draper for the top position. Brown and Draper made contact in turn 4 on lap 17 with Brown ending up on the infield and Draper continuing on. Brown was able to continue on but had lost too much ground to contend for the win. Draper went on for the win with Brown finishing a disappointing 6th.
The Modified women got their chance at the 1/3 mile oval at the end of the evening as the regular drivers turned the cars over to their wives/moms. Tammy Morrison and Nickie Sullivan put on a great show with Nickie getting the win. The lone yellow was caused by Corrie Bodendorfer as she hit the outside retaining wall on the front stretch right in front of her husband Jeff who was watching from the infield.
Cassie Tover of Kenosha, WI was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night and Tyler Detienne of Wilmot, WI won a bike from Antioch Cyclery.
The action continues next Saturday night as the IRA Outlaw Sprints make their second appearance of the season and are joined by the Sportsman, Street Stock and Mini-Sprint divisions. Hot laps start about 6:00pm and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Mike Reinke was crowned the “King of Wisconsin” and John Poehler continued his dominance of the Sportsman division Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. Reinke led only one lap, but it was the most important – the checkered, while Steve Meyer led 29 of the 30 but finished a disappointing second. Meyer grabbed the lead from the pole and looked extremely strong. Early in the event, third running Tommy Sexton spun collecting Bill Warren who flipped hard down the back stretch. A number of front runners including Rick Kelsey, Brian Kristan and Travis Whitney also had their problems later in the event. Meyer appeared he would be on his way to his second King of Wisconsin title. However Reinke began closing the gap in the races final laps showing his nose to the leader on lap 28, then making his winning pass on the final turn edging Meyer to the line by a car length. Seventh starting Todd Hepfner came home a strong third, over thirteenth starting KJ Skelton, and tenth starting Donny Goeden. Twenty-second starting Dave Moulis came home sixth and was the night’s hard charger.

In a scene becoming a weekly event, John Poehler picked up his fourth feature win in the sportsman division with Bobby Parker finishing second. Parker grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Ryan Stalter early on and appeared he might be able to hold off Poehler who also made his way past Stalter. However, Parker was unable to keep his car glued to the bottom of the racetrack and Poehler was able to slide by on lap 7. Parker was never able to mount a serious charge after losing the lead and finished second. Jim Fisher finished third and Stalter fourth.

Ron Brannum won the Mini-Sprint feature for the third time in 2006. Brannum, starting seventh, wasted no time moving to the front and completed lap number 1 already up to the second position behind pole-sitter Cody Ashwood. Brannum powered past Ashwood on the next revolution and won easily. The event’s only caution came out for an incident involving Ashwood and Austin Archdale. John Draper finished a distant second and Jessica Brannum a respectable third.
Ryan Marshall started the Street Stock feature event looking for his first feature win starting from the inside of row four. Halfway thorugh the event, it appeared as if Marshall might have a chance as he was right behind leader Jim Vandervere by lap 6. Unfortunately for Marshall, Vandervere was able to get past the lapped car of Kelly Kufke on lap nine but Marshall and Kufke made contact coming out of turn 4 ending up on in the infield. Vandervere went on to the win, his second of the season with Marty Abshire, last weeks’ winner finishing second. Marshall was able to recover from his incident with Kufke to finish sixth. Rounding out the top 5 were Brad Norgard, Bruce Laubinger and Steve Kennedy.
Jennifer Sexton of Antioch, IL was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night.
The action continues next Saturday night with the Outlaw Sprints, Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stock and Mini-Sprint divisions. Hot laps start about 6:30pm and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Mike Sullivan continued his domination while John Draper and Brad Norgard got their third feature wins Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. Sullivan won an exciting battle with Nick Simons on-route to his fourth feature win in five nights in the Modified division. The field was able to get in the first seven laps under green flag conditions with Lee Tibbitts leading BG Woods, Jim Morrison and Sullivan. After the restart, Sullivan was able to work his way to the front and got past Tibbitts for the lead with just eight laps left. Simons, putting on a late race charge was within about two car lengths and was closing when the yellow came out for the final time with just three laps left. Track officials decided to call the race due to the late hour giving the race to Sullivan. Kris Techert finished third and Mike Conn fourth.
John Draper picked up his third feature win of the season, tying him with Ron Brannum for the series lead in the Mini-Sprint division. Draper started on the pole with Brannum right behind him. Brannum was never able to get past Draper and Draper picked up the win.

The Street Stock division saw Brad Norgard pick up his series high third feature win. Defending champ Bruce Laubinger held the lead over Norgard until lap nine when Norgard took over. Laubinger up falling back to the fourth position before battling back to challenge Norgard for the win but fell short and had to settle for a second place finish. Steve Kennedy and Ryan Marshall finished third and fourth respectively.
Picking up his second-ever feature win in the Sportsman division was Bobby “The Colonel” Parker. Parker made a fantastic pass on lap nine past leader Jeff Graf who had started on the pole. Graf spun his #81 in turn one on lap 12 and Goeff Zdroik had nowhere to go and hit Graf, ending both of their nights. Parker went on to the win with John Poehler finishing second.

The Outlaw 410 Sprints had trouble getting their feature started with a crash in turn four on the opening lap taking out Tim Vandervere and Bill Wirth. A great battle developed between Chris Spitz and Rick Kelsey. Kelsey was able to get by Spitz on lap 14 and held on for the win, his first Wilmot feature win of the season.

Melissa Jones of Arlington Heights, IL was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night.

Well, someone finally beat Mike Sullivan. Unfortunately for those at the Wilmot Speedway, it was Mother Nature. Just as track officials were preparing to pack in the track, the clouds opened up and dumped enough rain to wash out the evening’s events.

Rick Kelsey made it two in a row in the Wilmot Outlaw Sprint division Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. Tim Vandervere jumped to the lead on the first lap from his outside first row starting position and appeared to be on his way to a feature win. Six laps into the 20 lap event, Vandervere led pole sitter Kevin Hinich, Larry Vandervere and Kelsey across the start finish line. By lap 10, Kelsey had moved past Hinich to take over the 2nd position and started to reel in Vandervere. Tommy Sexton was also on the move and took over the fourth spot dropping Larry Vandervere to fifth. On lap 16, Kelsey used a great move to get past Vandervere and held him off for the final 4 laps to pick up his second straight win. Sexton finished third and Hinich fourth.

Defending Modified champion Mike Bodendorfer picked up his first feature of the win in a shortened feature. Bodendorfer, starting seventh, had his work cut out for him as event started. The field was only able to get in 1 lap before the yellow came out for the first of many times with Jeff Bodendorfer Jr in the lead followed by Lee Tibbitts, Mike Bodendorfer and Mike Knurr. After trying several times to get restarted, the field was able to get in a couple of laps with Jeff Bodendorfer still in the lead with Jim Morrison in second and Mike Bodendorfer in third. Jimmy Muth Jr also made his entry into the top four on lap 5. Lap seven saw the Bodendorfer brothers running 1-2 with Mike inheriting the lead from Jeff. Jimmy Muth had also used the outside groove to get past Morrison to take over the third spot. On lap 9, the yellow came out for Tibbitts and Scott Shultis getting together in turn 3. The field was given a warning that the next yellow would be the end of the event and on lap 14, Clayton Holland came to a stop over in turn two giving the win to Mike Bodendorfer. Bodendorfer became just the third different driver in 6 nights to win in the Modifieds.

In the Street Stock division, new dad Bruce Laubinger picked up his first feature win of the 2006 season as he won easily over Jim Vandervere and Marty Abshire. Laubinger led from start to finish after pole sitter Ryan Marshall lost a wheel completing lap one and was never seriously challenged. Vandervere finished second, Abshire third and Brad Norgard fourth.

Vincent Merry won his second feature in a row in the truck division. Merry, starting outside of row one took the lead on the first time around and never looked back. Behind him, Tom and Chad Ross battled with Dale Gustum and Tom Benedetti for positions two on back. Chad Ross would beat out Tom Ross for second and Benedetti beat out Gustum for fourth.

Connor O’Neal of Milwaukee, WI was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night.

Jason Heyerdall, Geoff Zdroik, Jessica Brannum all picked up their first feature wins Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. Heyerdall outlasted the rest of the field and picked up his first feature win in the Modified division. The feature had the makings of a repeat of last week as the field was able to complete just one lap before going yellow for an incident involving Larry Surletta. On subsequent restarts, the Bodendorfer boys, Jeff and Mike, both brought out separate cautions dashing their hopes for a win. Over the next several laps, Heyerdall worked his way up past pole sitter Kris Techert and veteran Lee Tibbitts and held the lead as the field completed lap 5. Mike Sullivan, looking for his fifth win of the season, was able to work both the low and the high side of the speedway to his advantage and followed Heyerdall into the second position. However, by the time Sullivan had made his way through traffic, Heyerdall had opened up a big enough lead and Sullivan was never able to get close enough to challenge for the win and settled for second. Techert held on for a third place finish with Elmer Everman third and Mike Bodendorfer recovering for a fifth place finish.

Fourteen year-old Jessica Brannum swapped cars with her grandfather, Ron Brannum, for the evening and ran away from the rest of the Mini-Sprint field. Jessica started on the pole and never looked back enroute to her first Mini-Sprint feature win. In victory lane following the race, Jessica said she and her crew had been “telling grandma and grandpa there was something wrong with the car and that’s why she hadn’t won yet”. Apparently the teenager knows what she is talking about as she won easily in grandpa’s car and grandpa Ron finished fifth in Jessica’s car. Kirt Bores capped off a good night with a second place finish and John Draper rounded out the top three.

Another teenager also won his first feature event as Geoff Zdroik beat a persistent Bobby Parker and the rest of the Sportsman field. Zdroik had earlier won his heat race and started on the pole in the feature. Parker, wasted no time moving to the front and passed Jason Gaudynski, Jim Fisher and Ryan Stalter all on the first lap and set off after Zdroik. Unfortunately for Parker, Zdroik drove like a veteran and didn’t make a mistake forcing Parker to settle for second. John Poehler, starting on the tail end of the field, also had a nice run and took home a third place finish.

New Zealand's Michael Pickens captured his second Badger Midget Series feature victory of the season winning the A-Main which was plagued by numerous caution laps and attrition, causing the race distance to be shortened by the race organizer due to time constraints. Scott Hatton jumped from the second row to lead the opening lap, with Pickens taking the top position on the second time around. Series point leader Brad Kuhn moved into second place one lap later. The event’s first caution appeared on lap four with two more cautions and one red flag slowing the event during the next three laps. During a seventh lap caution Kuhn, who was running second, pulled into the infield with mechanical problems. On the restart Pickens held off the challenges of Danny Stratton for the lead. The pair slightly pulled ahead of the field which featured multi-groove racing around the 1/3-mile clay oval. Stratton spun challenging Pickens for the lead on the 11th lap, and was unable to restart the event. Pickens executed a perfect restart each time as the race leader. However, three more cautions in the next four laps caused the event to be yellow-checkered.

Vincent Merry made it three in a row as he won again in the Truck division. Merry had his hands full of “Ross” as both Tom and Chad Ross started the feature in the front row in front of Merry. He was able to make his way past Tom on the first lap but Chad proved to be a bit more difficult as it took Merry until lap five for the lead. Dale Gustum, looking for his third feature win, followed Merry and was running second on lap six before having problems exiting turn two and dropping several positions. Both Ross’ finished the night strong and followed Merry across the line with Tom taking second and Chad third. Gustum recovered just enough to finish fourth.
Working his way through the field, Jim Vandervere took the lead on lap eight and held off the rest of the Street Stock field and won his third feature of 2006. Starting on the pole, Ryan Marshall looked to have the inside track to his first feature win but mechanical problems ended his night shortly after it began. Marshall quickly fell back through the field until he brought his car to the infield after just a couple of laps. That allowed Todd Hensley who started outside row one to lead the event early on. However, Hensley also had problems and finished a disappointing 12th. Lap seven belonged to Marty Abshire followed by Vnadervere and Bruce Laubinger. Vandervere was able to use the inside groove to get past Abshire on the next lap and held on for the win. Abshire held off Laubinger in a spirited battle for second and Laubinger settling for third.
Zach Reidart of Pleasant Prairie, WI was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night.
The action continues next Saturday night with the Wilmot Outlaw Sprints, Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock and Mini-Sprint divisions. Hot laps start about 6:30pm and racing is scheduled to start at 7:00pm. Visit the Wilmot Speedway website for more information or call the track office at 262-279-3892.

Fourteen year-old Ryan Marshall won his first feature event and Jim Morrison won the night’s final event, a non-stop Modified feature, Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway.
Ryan Marshall, for the second week in a row, had the luck of starting from the pole position in the Street Stock feature. Unlike last week when mechanical problems forced Marshall to the pits at the drop of the green, Marshall took full advantage of his starting position and jumped to the lead right from the beginning. By lap seven, Marshall had a sizable lead built over second running Marty Abshire, Brad Norgard and Mike Vogt. The lead went up in smoke however, as Todd Hensley brought out the yellow on lap eight as he came to a stop on the backstretch. On the restart, Kelly Kufke, Bob Waltho Jr and Kevin Mueller all got together on the backstraight with significant damage to Kufke’s number 8. After the restart, Marshall ran four more flawless laps to beat Marty Abshire for the win and his first ever feature win. Abshire finished second and Bruce Laubinger, after starting on the rear of the field, finished third.

The Sportsman division continues to be very tight as the season winds down with John Sedesky gaining ground on John Poehler and Bobby Parker. The feature event started with visiting driver Tommy Moore on the pole and Jeff “Fireball” Graf on the outside of row one. Graf dropped back to the fifth position by the end of the first lap as Don Sorce Jr, John Sedesky and Roger Lee all making their way past. On lap five, Sorce used the inside line to take over the top spot from Moore. The top five would remain Sorce, Moore, Sidesky, Poehler and Parker until late in the event when Poehler made a mistake coming out of turn two and losing several positions. Sorce picked up the win with Moore in the runner-up spot.
It took several tries to the Wilmot Outlaw Sprints feature started, but once they did, the action was fast and furious. David O’Neal looked like he might be the one to beat as he jumped right out the lead from his pole-position followed by Kirk Fehrman and Patrick Haynes. However, going into turn two on lap two, Haynes got the back end of his number 15 a bit too far around and came to a halt in front of the entire field. Luckily, all the drivers were able to avoid him but Haynes was relegated to the rear for the restart. Kevin Hinich worked his way up to the second position by lap five and was starting to slowly catch O’Neal. He was followed by Brian Kristan and Jereme Schroeder. Lap traffic started to come into play on lap seven and on lap eight, O’Neal went to the outside to get past a lapped car at the end of the front straight. However, the lapped car moved to the outside to let the leaders by and squeezed O’Neal into the wall. O’Neal couldn’t make the transition into turn one and ended up going into the pit chute and came back up over the berm to rejoin the field. However, by that time, Kristan and a number of other drivers had already gotten past. Kristan held on for the win with Hinich second and Darrell Dodd third.
A wicked flip involving Austin Archdale barrel rolling several times at the start of the Mini-Sprint feature had everyone holding their breath. Luckily, all the drivers involved, including Archdale were ok. Ron Brannum’s car had to go back to the pits to have the wings removed and he returned in time to restart on the rear. John Draper, already with three feature wins in 2006, worked his way past Will Archdale by the end of lap three to take over the lead. Archdale held onto the second spot until lap seven when mechanical problems forced him to the pits. Archdale’s misfortune was Kirt Bores’ good fortune as he inherited the second position. However, he was unable to catch Draper who ended up with his fourth checkered flag of the season.

The Modified drivers must have been listening in the pits prior to the racing action as a new rule change, any driver causing a yellow would be black flagged, was put into place. For the first time that anyone could remember, the Modified feature went from the drop of the green to the checkered flag with no cautions. Larry Walter Jr outraced pole sitter Brad McGuire to the line on lap one and but was only able to hold the lead for two laps. On lap three, Scott Shultis took over in the front followed by Walter and Jim Morrison who had worked his way up from his fifth starting position. It took Morrison just four more laps to get past Shultis and was never seriously challenged by the second finishing Shultis. However, positions three on back weren’t decided until the final laps when Nick Simons beat the visiting number 73 for the third position.

BG Woods and Tom Ross became first time feature winners in 2006 Saturday evening at the Wilmot Speedway in which six different divisions of cars participated. Woods started on the outside of row three in the modified feature but was already up to the third position by the time the cars completed lap number two with Mike Knurr leading the field. The top position would change hands a number of times over the next several laps before Woods took over the spot for good on lap five. Knurr would slowly fall back through the field before exiting from the event with a broken left front on lap nine. The competition behind woods was fierce as Mike Simons, Jim Morrison, Jimmy Muth Jr and Mike Conn all battled it out. The event ended with some controversy as an incident in turn four as the checkered flag came out shuffled the field behind Woods. Mike Sullivan would be credited with a second place finish and Mike Simons finished third.

Tom Ross picked up his first feature win of 2006 in the Truck division with a great run. Ross took over the top spot from Tom Benedetti when Benedetti broke on lap eight while leading. Ross never looked back and held off Vincent Merry and Billy Combs to pick up the win.

In the Mini-Sprint division, John Draper picked up his series leading fifth main event win as he ran away from the rest of the field. Draper, who had earlier won his heat race, led from the drop of the green and won by almost ¾ of a track distance over second place finishing Tim Brannum. Jessica Brannum finished third.

John Poehler looked like he was trying to make a statement in the second last point’s night for the Sportman competitors. Starting fourth, Poehler used the inside line to work past John Sedesky on lap five to take the lead. Sidesky would have to hold off a charging Bobby Parker as the laps winded down to finish second with Parker settling for third. The Championship for the Sportsman division comes down to the final week of the season next Saturday night and is between Poehler and Parker.
Picking up his fourth feature checkered flag of the 2006 season, Jim Vandervere made it look easy against the rest of the Street Stock participants. Marty Abshire looked like he might have a chance to claim his first feature of the year early on but on lap seven, Vandervere made his way past Abshire to take control of the event. A caution on lap 13 for debris set the stage for a seven lap shootout but Vandervere pulled away from defending track champion Bruce Laubinger to pick up the win. Laubinger finished second and Abshire third.
A very exciting Wilmot Outlaw Sprints feature including cars from both the 410 and the 360 divisions was won by Brian Kristan, his second of the year at the Wilmot Speedway. Rick Kelsey looked to make it two in a row as he jumped to the front at the drop of the green. However, Mark Wernes took the lead from Kelsey on lap four dropping Kelsey to second followed by Kristan, Lance Fassbender and Tommy Sexton. Kristan would move ahead on lap seven with Kelsey taking over second after mechanical problems forced Wernes out. Kelsey had to live on the edge just to keep pace with Kristan and when he tried to push it a bit too hard on lap 12, tapped the outside retaining wall coming out of turn four and came to a hold in turn two bringing out the yellow. Yellows seemed to be the only thing that could slow down Kristan and he masterfully worked through traffic and picked up the win. Tim Vandervere completed a nice night by finishing second and Tommy Sexton came home third.

Kaitlyn Westman of Kenosha, WI was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night. The action continues next Saturday night with the Wilmot Outlaw Sprints competing in the Al and Marie Winker Memorial along with the championship night for the Sportsman, Street Stock and truck divisions. Tim Vandervere and Mike Sullivan didn’t win their respective features, but each were crowned champions Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway. Vandervere won the season long points battle in the Outlaw Sprint division and Sullivan won his first championship in the Modified division.
The Outlaw Sprint feature ran the first 10 laps without incident with Rick Kelsey taking the lead at the drop of the green from his 2nd starting position. Darrell Dodd, who started fourth, worked his was up to second on lap four and tried to gain ground on Kelsey. However, lapped traffic and a beautifully prepared race car allowed Kelsey to maintain his advantage. On lap 10, Brian Kristan and Dave Maynard tangled and flipped at the end of the back straightaway. Both drivers were uninjured but Maynard was taken off on a stretcher as a precaution. Once the race was restarted, it ran the final 10 laps without any cautions and Kelsey held Dodd off for the win. Vandervere finished behind Dodd and took home the championship.

Starting well back in the field, Mike Sullivan just needed to stay out of trouble in the Modified feature to wrap up his first championship. Despite some close calls, he was able to do it and finished fifth and pick up the championship trophy. Mike Knurr, starting outside of row one, immediately jumped to the lead over pole sitter Joel Crowbridge. Jeff Bodendorfer, who looked very strong during his heat race moved up to the second position by the time the field completed lap number four. A lap five incident involving several cars, including Mike Knurr moved Bodendorfer to the lead. Following the restart, Bodendorfer immediately started to fade with some mechanical problem turning the lead over to Mike Simons followed by Lee Tibbitts and Larry Marshall. Simons would battle with his brother Nick for several laps until Mike Bodendorfer got past Nick and went to work on Mike. It only took Bodendorfer one more lap to get past Mike and take over the lead. Bodendorfer picked up the win followed by Nick Simons and Jason Heyerdall.

Looking for his first feature win of the 2006 season, Kirt Bores started off the feature event for the Mini-Sprints from the front row on the inside. Five laps into the race, with Bores still holding the lead and Ron Brannum running second, John Draper caught the top two cars and looked like he might be on his way to his sixth feature win of the season and on lap eight took the lead from Bores. Brannum developed some sort of mechanical problem and began to fade back in the field. Draper led for the next eight laps and looked like he would get the win, but on lap sixteen, Draper pulled his number 44 off the track on the backstretch giving the lead back to Bores. Bores wasn’t challenged for the final four laps and picked up the win.

In a non-point event, Ed Duvall jumped in Bruce Laubinger’s number 18 street stock and showed the rest of the field that he can still drive. Jim Vandervere took the green flag from the pole position and led for the first six laps until Duvall took the inside line and got past him. Duvall pulled away from the rest of the field and won easily.
Terry Simons beat Jennifer Durham to the line on the last lap in the Street Stock powder puff race that capped off the 2006 season.
Justice Bottenfield of Silver Lake, WI was the National Bank, Employee Owned Junior Fan of the Night.
The action continues next Saturday night when the World of Outlaw Sprint cars come to town. Visit the Wilmot Speedway website for more information or call the track office at 262-279-3892.
